What is Watermarking?
Watermarking automatically adds your logo or text to preview images in your galleries:
✅ Benefits:
- Protect against unauthorized use/downloads
- Professional branding on all shared photos
- Automatic removal when clients purchase
- Customizable position and opacity
🎯 How it works:
- Preview images: Watermark visible
- Purchased downloads: Watermark removed (clients get clean files)
Quick Start (5 Minutes)
Step 1: Create Watermark Image
Best Practices:
- Format: PNG with transparency
- Size: 300-500px wide (scales automatically)
- Design: Simple, high-contrast logo or text
- Color: White or light colors work best (shows on all backgrounds)
Example watermarks:
- Your logo (company mark)
- Text: "© 2026 Your Name Photography"
- Website URL: "YourPhotography.com"
- Combination: Logo + URL
Step 2: Upload Watermark
- Log in to your account
- Go to Settings → Watermarking
- Click "Upload Watermark"
- Select your PNG file
- Preview watermark on sample photo
- Click "Save"
✅ Your watermark is now active!
Step 3: Configure Settings
Position: Where watermark appears
- Bottom Right (recommended - least intrusive)
- Bottom Left
- Top Right
- Top Left
- Center (not recommended - blocks subject)
Opacity: How transparent
- 30% - Very subtle
- 50% - Visible but not distracting (recommended)
- 70% - Bold and obvious
- 100% - Fully opaque
Size: How large
- Small (10% of image width)
- Medium (15% of image width) - recommended
- Large (20% of image width)
Designing an Effective Watermark
Logo-Based Watermarks
Best for: Established photography businesses
Design tips:
✅ DO:
- Use simplified logo (no complex details)
- High contrast (white on dark, dark on light backgrounds)
- Clean, legible font
- Include transparency around logo
❌ DON'T:
- Complex multi-color designs
- Tiny text (won't be readable)
- Low contrast logos
- Solid background rectangles
Example: Simple text logo "SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY" in white sans-serif
Text-Only Watermarks
Best for: New photographers or simple branding
Design tips:
- Use bold, sans-serif font (Arial, Helvetica)
- Include copyright symbol: © 2026
- Keep text short (max 30 characters)
- White text with 50% opacity
Examples:
- © 2026 Sarah Johnson Photography
- www.YourPhotos.com
- @YourPhotography (Instagram handle)
Creating Watermark in Photoshop
Step-by-step:
- New file: 500px × 100px, transparent background

Watermark Settings Explained
Global vs Gallery-Specific
Global Watermark (Settings → Watermarking):
- Applies to ALL galleries by default
- Set once, works everywhere
- Can be overridden per gallery
Gallery-Specific Watermark:
- Different watermark for specific gallery
- Useful for: Sub-brands, client-specific branding, collaborations
- Set in: Gallery Settings → Watermarking
Example use case:
- Global: Your main logo
- Sports team gallery: Custom watermark with team logo
Position Strategies
Bottom Right (70% of photographers use this):
- ✅ Least intrusive
- ✅ Doesn't block faces/subjects
- ✅ Industry standard
Bottom Left:
- Good for right-heavy compositions
- Alternative to bottom right
Top Right/Left:
- Good for landscape photos
- Doesn't interfere with subject at bottom
Center:
- ⚠️ Most intrusive
- Use only if theft prevention is critical
- Reduces client enjoyment
Recommendation: Bottom right, 50% opacity, medium size.
Opacity Best Practices
30% opacity:
- Subtle, minimal distraction
- Easy to remove (Photoshop clone tool)
- Use when: Client experience priority
50% opacity (RECOMMENDED):
- Balance between protection and visibility
- Clearly visible but not distracting
- Difficult to remove without degrading image
70-100% opacity:
- Maximum protection
- Very obvious watermark
- Use when: High theft risk, free previews
Trade-off: Higher opacity = better protection, but worse client experience.
Advanced Features
Conditional Watermarking
Watermark only public galleries:
- Settings → Watermarking → "Apply to public galleries only"
- Private/password-protected galleries: No watermark
- Useful for: Trusted clients, private family galleries

Dynamic Watermarking
Different watermarks by gallery type:

- watermark-wedding.png
- watermark-sports.png
- watermark-portrait.png
2. Upload to each gallery type in gallery settings
Use case:
- Wedding galleries: Elegant script watermark
- Sports galleries: Bold, modern watermark
- Portrait galleries: Minimalist text
Text Watermarking (Built-in)
No image required - use text only:
- Settings → Watermarking
- Choose "Text Watermark" option
- Enter text (e.g., "© Your Name Photography")
- Choose font, size, color, opacity
- Save
Pros: Easy, no design needed
Cons: Less customizable than image watermark
Recommended text: © 2026 [Your Name]
Client Communication About Watermarks
Setting Expectations
In gallery invitation email:
"Your gallery is ready! Preview images include a small watermark for protection. When you purchase photos, you'll receive high-resolution downloads with no watermark."
On gallery page (automatic message):
"Preview images are watermarked. All purchased downloads are watermark-free."
Handling Client Questions
Q: "Can you remove the watermark?"
A: "The watermark is on preview images only. When you purchase a photo, your download will be watermark-free at full resolution."
Q: "I just want to use it for Facebook. Can I get it without the watermark?"
A (Option 1): "Photos are available for purchase starting at $10 for social media size, watermark-free."
A (Option 2): "I offer a limited personal use license for $5 that includes watermark-free social media size."
A (Option 3): "Let me send you one complimentary photo for social media - which one would you like?"
Troubleshooting
Watermark Not Appearing
Check:
1. Watermarking enabled: Settings → Watermarking → Toggle ON
2. Watermark image uploaded (green checkmark)
3. Gallery setting: Gallery Settings → Watermarking → "Use watermark" is ON
4. Clear browser cache: Ctrl+Shift+Delete
Fix: Re-upload watermark, refresh browser
Watermark Too Small/Large
Adjust size:
1. Settings → Watermarking
2. Change "Size" setting (Small/Medium/Large)
3. Preview changes on sample photo
4. Save
Note: Watermark scales based on image size (responsive)
Watermark Not Visible on Dark Photos
Problem: Dark watermark on dark background
Solutions:
Option 1: Use white watermark (recommended)
- Visible on both light and dark backgrounds
- Add subtle drop shadow for contrast
Option 2: Add border to watermark
- Photoshop: Add white stroke/outline to logo
- Makes watermark visible on all backgrounds
Option 3: Use higher opacity (70-80%)
Watermark Quality Looks Pixelated
Cause: Watermark image too small
Fix:
1. Recreate watermark at higher resolution:
- Minimum 500px wide
- Recommended 800-1000px wide
2. Save as PNG (not JPG)
3. Re-upload to SmarterPhoto
Clients Complain Watermark Blocks Faces
Solution:
1. Change position: Bottom Right → Bottom Left (or vice versa)
2. Reduce size: Large → Medium
3. Reduce opacity: 70% → 50%
Best practice: Test watermark on 10 sample photos before sharing gallery
Watermark Removal (Purchased Photos)
Automatic Removal
How it works:
1. Client adds photo to cart
2. Client completes purchase
3. System generates watermark-free download link
4. Client receives email with clean download
Processing time: Instant (download link in email)
File: Full resolution, no watermark, original quality
Manual Removal (Special Cases)
Scenario: Client purchased, but still sees watermark
Cause: Browser showing cached watermark version
Fix:
1. Client clears browser cache
2. Or: Send direct download link via email
3. Or: Resend download link from Purchases page

Legal Considerations
Does Watermarking Protect Copyright?
Yes AND No:
✅ Watermark provides:
- Visual deterrent (reduces casual theft)
- Attribution (people know whose photo it is)
- Professionalism
❌ Watermark does NOT:
- Provide legal copyright (you already own copyright automatically)
- Prevent determined thieves (can be removed)
- Replace proper licensing agreements
Bottom line: Watermark is one layer of protection, not complete protection.
Copyright Notice Text
Recommended format:
© [Year] [Your Full Name]. All Rights Reserved.
Example:
© 2026 Sarah Johnson Photography. All Rights Reserved.
Why "All Rights Reserved"?: Clarifies that no permissions are granted by viewing.
Watermark Strategy by Photography Type
Wedding Photography
Recommendation: Light watermark (30-40% opacity)
Why: Clients want to enjoy/share previews, less theft risk (personal photos)
Position: Bottom right, small size
Text: © Your Name (simple, elegant)
Sports Photography
Recommendation: Medium watermark (50-60% opacity)
Why: Higher theft risk (team photos shared widely), parents less concerned about watermark
Position: Bottom right, medium size
Text: Logo or © Your Name Sports (establishes brand)
Stock/Commercial Photography
Recommendation: Bold watermark (70-80% opacity), center
Why: High theft risk, samples only (not final deliverables)
Position: Center diagonal (blocks significant portion)
Text: SAMPLE - NOT FOR USE + logo
Portrait Photography
Recommendation: Subtle watermark (40% opacity)
Why: Clients enjoy sharing previews, personal connection reduces theft
Position: Bottom corner, small size
Text: Logo or YourPhotography.com
